Here is how to spend a day in Carlsbad Caverns, built from the hikes and activities the National Park Service lists and the time it says each takes. Times are for the activity itself; add time for driving, parking and shuttles between stops, and swap anything that is closed or out of season.
Day 1
About 5 hours of listed activity time, plus stops with no listed time.
Start at Visitor Center for maps, current trail conditions and ranger advice.
Morning
- Lower Cave Tour (3 hours). In 1924, National Geographic expedition members wrote about the wonders of Lower Cave. (permit or reservation needed)
Afternoon
- Rattlesnake Springs Picnic Area (time not listed). Have a relaxing picnic among tall cottonwood trees and watch for a variety of birds.
- Explore the Cavern at Your Own Pace (1 to 3 hours). The Big Room and Natural Entrance trails can be enjoyed at your own pace. (permit or reservation needed)
